Two state legislators have filed a budget amendment, which, if passed and enacted into law, would impose compensation caps on top executives of Massachusetts nonprofits that receive state funds, based on their organizations’ annual operating budgets.

Rick Jakious, CEO of the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network, the state’s nonprofit trade association took issue with the proposed amendment, saying, “The strong partnership between state government and nonprofits allows for an efficient and effective delivery of important services to the citizens of the Commonwealth.
“Policy decisions that could have a significant effect on this partnership ought to be taken up through the established legislative process, not a budget amendment that does not allow for appropriate input and deliberation.”

Governor Deval Patrick signed into law legislation on Thursday that will enable small nonprofits to leverage their collective power to purchase affordable and accessible retirement plans.

“Nonprofit professionals are part of every aspect of our lives. They educate us, keep us healthy, take care of the underserved and protect our cultural, historical and environmental treasures,” said Rick Jakious, CEO of the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network. “This law is important because it takes care of the nonprofit workers who take care of the Commonwealth.”

The Massachusetts Nonprofit Network (MNN), a statewide organization that works to strengthen and raise the profile of the state’s nonprofit sector, has opened nominations for the fourth annual Nonprofit Excellence Awards. The awards recognize the work of exceptional nonprofits and nonprofit leaders in communities across the state.

Rick Jakious has been named chief executive officer of the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network (MNN), the association that represents the Commonwealth’s nonprofit sector.

He succeeds David Magnani, former Massachusetts state senator who served as MNN’s first organizational leader. MNN was launched in 2007 with the goal of strengthening community by serving nonprofit organizations in the Commonwealth.
MNN now includes almost 500 members representing nonprofits in every part of Massachusetts, from the Berkshires to the Cape and Islands.
