Boston-based nonprofits, such as hospitals, universities, and other nonprofits, that hire jobless city residents would get a credit of up to $1,500 off the amount they are asked to pay to the city in lieu of property taxes under a plan proposed by Mayor Thomas M. Menino.

According to the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network, the state trade association of nonprofits, “Complying with the PILOT payments can have negative implications on the level and caliber of services provided and on the financial stability of the nonprofit” as it would have to divert some existing funds to for PILOT payments or develop new funding sources for that purpose.
