July 7, 2011 — Kip Tiernan, a staunch advocate for the poor, and founder of Rosie’s Place, the nation’s first shelter for homeless women, and numerous other Massachusetts nonprofits, died of cancer on July 2 at the age of 85.

Esther Hanig, deputy director of the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network (MNN), the state’s nonprofit trade association, said, “Kip Tiernan, who was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the MNN/AGM 2009 Annual Conference, was a role model and heroine for the nonprofit community. Her dedication and prolific work changed thousands of lives. She will be sorely missed, but she leaves an incredible legacy.”
