In no other state does the nonprofit sector provide more jobs, economic clout and daily positive interaction in our lives and work than in Massachusetts. And so it is fitting that today Massachusetts celebrates its first Nonprofit Awareness Day.
From the local new mothers’ club to the Parent Teacher Organization to soccer leagues, Meals on Wheels and the community hospital, nonprofits play a role in each of our lives in some way every day. We rarely, if ever, recognize that all of these various organizations, clubs, leagues, associations – the people who house the homeless, who provide our health care, who run our museums, who coach our children and provide them with life-affirming volunteer opportunities – all comprise what is the largest and arguably the most important sector of our state’s economy.
