David Magnani is waiting for another shoe to drop. Devastating cuts to state-backed human services and anxiety across the sector over declining donations amid a global economic crisis have leaders worried.

But Magnani, executive director of the fledgling Massachusetts Nonprofit Network, says he isn’t down and isn’t out.

“The only way to fail is to quit,” said Magnani, repeating a lesson from his father.

Supporters say Magnani, who has held his post since the organization’s founding in 2007, is well-equipped for the job. He’s earned four degrees, founded nonprofit organizations and served as a Massachusetts legislator for more than 20 years.
